Yellowstone's Surprise Hydrothermal Explosion

Eruption Shoots Towering Column of Boiling Water and Rock

July 23, 2024 | Updated 8:55 pm

A hydrothermal explosion shot a towering column of boiling water, mud, and rock into the air at Yellowstone National Park on Tuesday, surprising visitors and scientists alike.

The explosion occurred in the park's Norris Geyser Basin, one of the most active geothermal areas in the world. The eruption shot a column of debris more than 1,000 feet into the air, according to the National Park Service.

No injuries have been reported, but the eruption forced the closure of several trails and roads in the area. The National Park Service is advising visitors to stay away from the eruption site until it is deemed safe.

Scientists are still investigating the cause of the eruption, but they believe it was caused by a buildup of pressure in the hydrothermal system beneath the surface. Hydrothermal explosions are relatively common in Yellowstone, but this is one of the largest in recent years.
