43 North Korean Escapees Reached South Korea in the First Quarter, Seoul Says

Unification Minister Meets Pastors to Discuss North Korean Issues

According to the South Korean Unification Ministry, 43 North Korean escapees have arrived in South Korea during the first quarter of 2024. This marks a significant increase compared to the same period last year, when only 27 North Koreans defected to the South.

The ministry stated that the increase in defections could be attributed to the worsening economic conditions in North Korea. The country has been grappling with food shortages and international sanctions, which have severely impacted the livelihoods of its citizens.

South Korean Unification Minister Kwon Young-se met with a group of pastors on April 29 to discuss the issue of North Korean defectors. During the meeting, Minister Kwon expressed his concern about the growing number of North Koreans fleeing their country and pledged to provide support for their resettlement in South Korea.

The pastors expressed their willingness to assist the government in its efforts to help North Korean defectors. They also urged the government to take a more proactive approach to addressing the root causes of the defections, such as the human rights abuses and economic hardship in North Korea.

The meeting between Minister Kwon and the pastors highlights the importance of cooperation between the government and civil society groups in addressing the challenges posed by North Korean defections. It also underscores the ongoing humanitarian crisis in North Korea and the need for international attention and support.
