A Korean-American's Uncharted Path

From Underwater Adventures to Celestial Horizons

As the son of South Korean immigrants, Jonathan "Jonny" Yong Kim embarked on an extraordinary journey that has taken him from the depths of the ocean to the boundless expanse of space. Born on February 5, 1984, in Los Angeles, California, Kim has etched his name in the annals of American history as a Navy Lieutenant Commander, SEAL, Navy Flight Surgeon, Naval Aviator, and NASA astronaut.

Kim's path has been marked by a relentless pursuit of excellence and a thirst for adventure. After graduating from Harvard University and the University of California, San Diego School of Medicine, he joined the Navy's elite SEAL program. There, he honed his skills as a combat medic and sniper, serving in missions around the globe. Following his time with the SEALs, Kim transitioned to the Navy's medical corps and became a Navy Flight Surgeon, responsible for the health and well-being of pilots and flight crews.

But Kim's ambitions extended beyond the confines of Earth's atmosphere. In 2017, he was selected by NASA to join its astronaut corps. Since then, he has completed multiple spacewalks and served as the International Space Station's Increment Lead for Expedition 65 in 2021.
